Preschool History

  • Christ & Holy Trinity Church took possession of the Methodist Church Building on August 1, 1966.  Called the Seabury Center, it was used occasionally for services and Church School on Sundays
  • Bishop Seabury Christian Dayschool opened on September 12, 1966 to provide the young child with the best possible educational experience in accordance with accepted professional standards and techniques within the framework of a Christian atmosphere.  Mrs. Bettina Elliott was the first Head of the School for pre-kindergarten children.
  • June 1967 – enrollment was 32 children and 5 teachers.
  • September 1978, Mrs. Linda Reilly took over as Head of the school.
  •  In 1981, it was felt that the Seabury Nursery School, though an educational force at the preschool level, lacked Christian connection and orientation.  Celebration of Christian seasons, a Chapel Service, and more emphasis on a Christian culture was desired by the Rector and other professionals and parishioners.  Unable to accomplish this with the then present parents, the Seabury Nursery School was closed and a new school began.
  • Christ & Holy Trinity Church Dayschool opened on Ash Wednesday, 1982 with Mrs. Jean Wall as Acting Director, and two teachers from the previous Nursery School staff, Mrs. Wyckoff and Mrs. Lenoir.  The Rector was named Headmaster of the School.  The enrollment was seven children.
  • March, 1982, Mrs. Carol Goetz was appointed Director and during the 80’s the school grew to over 76 children.  Many changes were made to improve the building and facilities of the school and meet Fire, Police, State, and local licensing requirements.  A weekly Chapel service was led by the clergy of the church and special Christian days were observed, but the school was non-denominational in its teaching and admission policies.  A Preschool Board of Directors was created for oversight responsibility for the school.
  • After Mrs. Goetz’ retirement in 1998, Mrs. Moira O’Connor was appointed Director of the Preschool with an enrollment of 76 children.  Today, much more has been done in the upgrading of the curriculum and facilities as well as obtaining accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
  • The little red schoolhouses’ history is also noteworthy – built as a shed to store outdoor toys and vehicles used on the playground, it was intended to send a message that the Preschool was a real school in the midst of our crowded community – thereby it was made to look like an old-fashioned school house by putting on a cupola with a real bell in it and painting the building red.
